The Associated Press projects that Joe Biden has become the presumptive Democratic nominee after winning enough delegates in the Georgia primary to make a rematch with Donald Trump all but certain.
Tuesday’s election in Georgia pushed the number of U.S. presidential delegates past 1,968, the Associated Press said.
Former President Donald Trump is expected to win the Republican nomination, needing 1,215 delegates, with races taking place in Georgia, Mississippi, Washington and Hawaii.
Despite low approval ratings and a lack of enthusiasm among voters for his presidency, partly due to his age, Biden does not face any serious Democratic challenge in his re-election bid.
A recent survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that only 38% of U.S. adults approve of the way Biden is handling the job of being president, while 61% disapprove.
On the eve of Tuesday’s primary, Trump conceded that Biden would be the Democratic nominee even as he launched new attacks on the president’s age.
“I think he’s going to be the nominee,” Trump said of Biden on CNBC. “Besides life, life itself, I am his only opponent.”
Biden has also turned much of his attention to Trump, whom the Democratic president described as a serious threat to democracy during a campaign event in New Hampshire on Monday night. He also said he would take a stronger role in the campaign.
“I look forward to hosting more and more of these events,” Biden said. He then joked about his age. “I know I don’t look like much, but I’ve been around for a while.”
