Delhi Police arrests 7 people for supplying 'fake' cancer chemotherapy drugs

The Delhi Police crime branch has busted a seven-member gang allegedly involved in manufacturing and supplying fake “life-saving” cancer chemotherapy drugs, officials said on Tuesday.

The arrested accused are Viphil Jain (46), Suraj Shat (28), Neeraj Chauhan (38), Parvez (33), Komal Tiwari (39), Abhinay Kohli (30) and Tushar Chauhan ( 28), played a trick that police say was being committed by selling “fake” drugs.

Special Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Shalini Singh said: “We received information about the racket in the manufacture and supply of fake cancer medicines and subsequently formed a special team.”

“Jain rented two EWS flats in Moti Nagar and used the same flats to refill fake cancer drugs (vials). Suraj Shat was responsible for managing the refilling and packaging of these vials,” the senior official said.

She added that during the raids, 140 vials containing fake cancer injections under the brands Opdyta, Keytruda, Dextrose, Fluconodium were seized along with three capping machines, one heat gun machine and 197 empty vials and other necessary Packaging Materials.

One Neeraj Chauhan stocked up on fake cancer injections at his apartment in Gurgaon, the special prosecutor said.

During the raids, 137 vials of fake cancer injections namely Keytruda, Infinzi, Tecentriq, Perjeta, Opdyta, Darzalex and Erbitux were seized along with 519 empty vials of Keytruda, Infinzi, Tecentriq, Perjeta, Opdyta, Darzalex and Phesgo and 864 packs Empty boxes containing the said vials and the fake cancer vials mentioned were also recovered, the official said.

She added that at Neeraj’s behest, his cousin Tushar Chauhan, who was addicted to the supply chain, was also arrested.

Police arrested one Parvez from Yamuna Vihar for arranging empty bottles for Vifil Jain and being involved in supply of refilled bottles. Twenty empty bottles were recovered from his possession.

Two persons working in the mixed cytotoxic unit of the hospital – Komal Tiwari and Abhinay Kohli – were arrested in the fourth raid, which was conducted at a prominent cancer hospital in the city (unnamed by the police). The special CP claimed that they were involved in offering empty bottles at a price of Rs 5,000 per bottle.

Police said Neeraj Chauhan, who worked as a manager in the oncology department of a reputed hospital, joined hands with Jain in 2022 and used his experience to provide fake chemotherapy injections at affordable prices.
