The Oklahoma State Patrol said Saturday they closed a highway south of Sallisaw after a barge struck a bridge over the Arkansas River.

After receiving information about the incident, troopers closed South Highway 59 around 1:25 p.m. and diverted traffic in the area, State Patrol spokesperson Sarah Stewart said.

The bridge, which spans the Arkansas River and enters the Robert Kerr Reservoir, will remain closed until it can be inspected, she said.

Stewart said there were no reports of injuries on the highway or on the barge.

It is unclear what caused the barge to hit the bridge.

The news comes as engineers were hoisting a twisted section of steel from Maryland’s Francis Scott Key Bridge on Saturday, which fell into Pattap after a large cargo ship struck one of its main supports. Sco River.
