Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarty said misreading the pitch was one of the reasons for their defeat against hosts Chennai Super Kings on Monday. The pitch used for Monday’s game performed differently than the pitch used for the previous two games. KKR scored just 137/9, with CSK chasing in 17.4 overs. “When I saw the wicket, it looked like a flat wicket. But the way it behaved was completely different,” Chakravarthy said during the post-match media interaction. “We could have assessed the course better because it was very slow at the beginning. It was hard to connect the ball but I felt 160 was a par score.

“Also, there was a lot of dew. Things changed a lot the last time I bowled to (Shivam) Dube because the seam was very wet and I couldn’t catch the ball,” the mystery spinner said.

Monday’s seven-run defeat was KKR’s first loss of the season.

Chakaravarthy failed to pick up a wicket and ended up with 0/26, but he was the most economical of the bunch.

“We have plans for every batsman but the most important thing is to execute them. In every team, some batsmen are going to dominate and you have to find a way to counter them,” he said.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also felt that the stroke play was tough on the surface.

“The wickets in the last two games have been really good. It’s hit the bat well and we’ve continued to bowl.

“The ball was a little laggy in the second innings (in this match) and there was some dew as well. I believe the sudden climate change, increased humidity and dew, played a role,” Gaikwad said.
