Ahead of the much-awaited selection of the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup, there was talk of including star all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the 15-man squad based on his current form in the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Hardik is currently captaining MI in IPL 2024. The team is at ninth position with three wins and six losses. Pandya has also not been in the best of form, scoring just 197 runs in nine matches at an average of 24.62 and a strike rate of over 151. His best score is 46. He has bowled only 19 overs in the tournament, taking four wickets. Average 56.75 and economy rate 11.94.

Furthermore, sources said that this tournament could mark the final international outing for experienced captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20I format.

Both Rohit and Virat returned to the T20I set-up against Afghanistan in January this year. Before this, their previous defeat was a 10-wicket loss to England in the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. After this crushing defeat, Team India tried youngsters like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Verma, Rahul Tripathi, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal etc. in the shorter format at the top order.

They are two of India’s most skilled T20I batsmen. Virat is the highest run scorer in T20I cricket. In 117 matches, he has scored 4,037 runs in 109 innings with one century and 37 fifties at an average of 51.75 and a strike rate of over 138. His best score is 122*.

Rohit is the second-highest run-scorer in this format, with 3,974 runs at an average of over 31 and a strike rate of nearly 140. His best score is 121*. He has five centuries and 29 fifties to his name in this format.

With these two players in the team, some young and promising stars may find themselves in the reserves instead of the playing eleven.
