Cupertino, California, USA

Among the major players in the smartphone industry, Apple stands out as the only smartphone maker yet to launch a foldable device. Samsung has launched five iterations of the Galaxy Z Fold series, Google joined the fray with the Pixel Fold last year, and OnePlus launched the OnePlus Open.

This raises the question: What form might an eventual iPhone foldable device take? Will it be a compact iPad, potentially replacing the iPad mini, or can we expect a foldable clamshell iPhone? Here, let’s take a closer look at what we know about Apple’s highly anticipated foldable device.

First, several analysts, including Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman, have mentioned developments allegedly taking place in Cupertino. Ming-Chi Kuo talked about Apple’s first “foldable product” in 2022, speculating that it might take the form of a “foldable iPad or a hybrid of iPad and iPhone elements.” Additionally, Mark Gurman, known for his accurate insider insights, said in 2021 that Apple’s first foldable device could arrive in two to three years.

Before a foldable iPhone, we might see a foldable iPad mini

Recently, South Korean reports suggested that the expected foldable device could be the successor to the iPad mini. According to The Elec, Apple is in the early planning stages of a compact foldable iPad, which is expected to be launched in 2026 to 2027. To narrow things down, this potential iPad could have a screen size of 7 to 8 inches, possibly as a replacement for the current 8.3-inch iPad Mini.

Notably, both Samsung and LG are reportedly working with Apple to design foldable panels for the device.

Clamshell iPhone?

According to The Information, Apple is actively developing two sizes of foldable iPhones. The report states that these iPhones are designed to fold horizontally, using a clamshell form factor similar to the Galaxy Z Flip or Moto Razr Plus. However, these potential models may not enter mass production this year or in 2025.

Foldable devices are expensive, but what can we expect from Apple?

One of the factors to consider is the cost associated with foldable technology. Apple is known for its high pricing, especially its ‘Pro’ series, with the iPhone 15 Pro starting at $999 or Rs 1,34,900 in India. If Apple were to launch a foldable iPhone, it would be reasonable to expect the price to be higher. Given that this will be a first-generation device, Apple may need time to choose a mature and realistic pricing strategy.

Previous reports suggested a launch price of around $1,499. However, it will be interesting to see what Apple ultimately prices, given the pricing of competitors like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Pixel Fold, which retail for $1,799.
