Chinese scientists develop 'game-changing' AI spy technology: report

Beijing researchers claim huge ‘technological breakthrough’

Chinese scientists have reportedly developed a new “game-changing” military surveillance technology that means enemies on the battlefield will have “nowhere to hide” South China Morning Post (SCMP). Researchers from Beijing claim to have achieved a huge “technological breakthrough” and say their technology can enable seamless, wide-bandwidth, real-time monitoring and analysis across the electromagnetic spectrum.

The Chinese military can use this cutting-edge technology to detect and track enemy signals at unparalleled speeds, instantly decipher the physical characteristics of these signals, and effectively suppress them.

On January 17, the Chinese academic journal Radio Communication Technology published a peer-reviewed paper explaining this breakthrough technology.

Yang Kai, chief scientist of the project, wrote in the paper that the new electromagnetic spectrum monitoring equipment is “small in size, high in performance and low in power consumption.” He noted that this kind of technology was previously thought to be impossible because of the vast amounts of data that needed to be processed during the war.

Researchers believe such technology will lead to “a profound transformation in the art of war.” Currently, both China and the United States are involved in the struggle for dominance of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Mr. Yang further explained that traditional spectrum monitoring systems are limited by hardware, and the real-time analysis bandwidth is generally limited to 40-160 MHz. All signals outside this specific range are typically monitored by sampling sweeps.

However, the new device enables seamless detection and real-time monitoring of frequencies in the gigahertz region by extending the frequency range. This includes frequency ranges used by amateur radio operators and Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites. Additionally, it can capture and analyze pulse signals emitted by U.S. military forces even as they quickly switch to civilian frequencies.

The team also introduced artificial intelligence (AI) into key data analysis processes, employing at least two different AI technologies to address various challenges, such as distinguishing civilian and military signals, large data sets, etc.

Yang’s team wrote in the paper that even in the face of enemy interference, they could still discover the enemy’s weaknesses from strong background noise and launch an effective counterattack.
