Meta says it is investigating global Facebook and Instagram service outages

Meta said on Tuesday it was investigating a widespread outage across its Facebook, Instagram and Threads platforms after users around the world were locked out of their accounts.

Meta spokesman Andy Stone posted on X (formerly Twitter): “We are aware that people are having difficulty accessing our service. We are working to resolve the issue now.”

According to the DownDetector website, Facebook’s outage peaked at around 500,000 people at 10:30 a.m. East Coast time in the United States. Instagram peaked at about 70,000 reports at a time.

Twitter rival Threads, launching in 2023, has also suffered reported service outages, although Meta’s messaging service WhatsApp appears to have survived.

Facebook’s status page for advertisers said the site was experiencing “significant disruption” and that “the engineering team is actively working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

Users trying to access Facebook are asked to log in but are unable to log in with the correct password.

On Instagram, mobile users are finding that their feeds are not refreshing.

Facebook is the world’s largest social media platform with 3 billion monthly active users. According to the latest data, Instagram has approximately 1.35 billion users.
