At least two players, including some members of the national women’s team, suffered serious injuries in a road accident earlier this month when they defied the curfew called for the ongoing white-ball home series against the West Indies. Had walked out of the camp, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Sunday. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi told reporters, PCB has taken disciplinary action against the players. He said five to six players of the national women’s team had walked out in the evening during the April 2-8 camp in Karachi without informing the team management. “They were involved in a road accident in which at least two players were seriously injured and are now undergoing treatment,” he said.

Naqvi said that since these players are half of the team, the PCB did not publicize the incident as well as the internal disciplinary action taken against these players.

“What they did was wrong and as a result we have now appointed a full-time senior rank security police officer to be with the team around the clock and enforce appropriate timings.”

The PCB chief said the incident had an impact on the team’s performance in the ODI series against the West Indies as one of the key players, Fatima Sana, was injured.

He did not describe the nature or severity of the injury suffered by Sana, who surprisingly was involved in all three matches of the ODI series that ended on April 23 and which Pakistan lost 0-3.

Sana also played the first match of the five-match T20 series on 26 April.

Naqvi also said that the board is also in touch with some candidates to be appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan women’s team.

“We are talking to a high profile foreign coach,” he said.
