China says US veto in UN armistice vote made Gaza 'more dangerous'

Beijing:

China warned on Wednesday that the United States’ decision to veto a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza pushed the conflict into a “more dangerous” situation.

Washington on Tuesday vetoed an Algerian-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in war-torn Gaza and the “unconditional” release of all hostages kidnapped in the Oct. 7 attack.

Washington’s ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, called the vote “wishful and irresponsible” because it could put talks to free hostages in Gaza “in jeopardy.”

The veto prompted criticism from China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and even close U.S. allies France and Slovenia.

“China voted in favor of the draft resolution,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

The United States once again single-handedly vetoed the resolution, pushing the situation in Gaza into a more dangerous situation. All relevant parties expressed strong disappointment and dissatisfaction.

Mao Zedong said: “The humanitarian situation in Gaza is very serious, and regional peace and stability have been seriously affected.”

“The Security Council must act as quickly as possible to cease hostilities. This is a moral obligation that cannot be delayed,” she said.

We will continue to work with all parties in the international community to push the Security Council to take further responsible and meaningful actions and make unremitting efforts to quell the war in Gaza at an early date.
