‘Captain of the past decade…’: Rohit Sharma breaks silence on Mumbai Indians’ poor start, Captain Cricket News

Veteran opening batsman Rohit Sharma talks about Mumbai Indians (MI)’s slow start to IPL 2024 under new captain Hardik Pandya Start. After a decade at the helm, Rohit was stripped of the captaincy before the start of the new season and Hardik replaced him, rejoining the five-time champions Gujarat Titans (GT). As early as 2022, Hardik led GT to win the championship in the first season of IPL and last season led GT to a runner-up finish. However, MI traded Hardik from GT as part of an all-cash deal ahead of the IPL 2024 player auction.

However, Hardik’s captaincy so far has been a challenging period to say the least, with the team finishing second from bottom with just two wins in six matches.

Hardik was booed wherever Mumbai Indians played, including the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit spoke on the Club Prairie Fire Podcast about his journey as captain and revealed MI’s slow start to IPL 2024.

“Actually, this has been the story of Mumbai Indians over the years, we started off quite slowly and then things started to change. I guess it has to do with having new players in the team and it’s just because of the past captaincy of the team Ten years were stagnant, the coaches changed for a few years, but the captaincy remained stagnant,” Rohit said.

“I actually went through some thought process and I wanted to understand the situation from the people who were coming in and involve them in my thought process because I know how the IPL works and what it takes to be a successful team, so It takes time to get to know everyone on board and get them to do things they are not used to doing, for example there are a lot of cricketers, overseas players, local players who have joined the team and I know the Wankhede Stadium because I played there Pass the ball. I grew up there, so I know what works there and what you need to do.”

Rohit led MI to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022, making him the most successful captain in the tournament along with MS Dhoni.
