US President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington would not support Israel’s counterattack against Iran, according to media reports. Biden delivered his message to Netanyahu in a phone call on Sunday after Iran fired a series of drones and missiles directly into Israeli territory.

A White House official told US news agency Axios that Biden also told Netanyahu during the call that the United States “will not participate in any offensive operations against Iran and will not support such operations.”

To this, Netanyahu responded that he understood, the official added.

White House officials further said that Biden told Netanyahu that the “joint defense efforts” of the United States, Israel and other countries in the region “led to the failure of the Iranian attack.”

The US president then told the Israeli prime minister: “You win. Accept the victory.”

In an official statement after his call with Netanyahu, Biden said he condemned in the strongest possible terms the attacks by “Iran and its proxies in Yemen, Syria and Iraq.”

“At my direction, and in support of Israel’s defense, the U.S. military has dispatched aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the past week… We have helped Israel shoot down nearly all incoming drones and missiles,” he explain. This was cited in a statement released by the White House.

Biden said he reiterated to Netanyahu Washington’s “ironclad commitment to Israel’s security”

“I told him that Israel had demonstrated an extraordinary ability to defend and defeat an unprecedented attack – sending a clear message to its enemies that they could not effectively threaten Israel’s security.”

The president further said that on Sunday, he would “convene G7 leaders to coordinate a unified diplomatic response to Iran’s shameless attack.”

“We will remain vigilant against all threats and will not hesitate to take any action necessary to protect our people.”

Shortly after Iran launched more than 200 missiles and drones toward Israel early Sunday morning, Biden held a meeting with his security advisers to discuss the situation.

However, Axios quoted U.S. officials as saying that Biden and his top advisers remain highly concerned that “Israel’s response to an Iranian attack on Israel will lead to a regional war with catastrophic consequences.”

Iran’s unprecedented attack was in retaliation for an April 1 airstrike on its consulate in Damascus that killed seven Revolutionary Guards personnel, including two commanders, and six Syrian civilians. However, Israel has not yet acknowledged the airstrike.

The Israeli military claimed that its forces intercepted the “vast majority” of Iranian missiles and drones, adding that there had been multiple “small-scale attacks” in southern Israel that caused minor damage to infrastructure.
