Android users may soon be able to use iMessage for iPhone as Sunbird returns

By | Published | No Comments

Sunbird, notorious for security flaws while trying to bring iMessage to Android, is back with a vengeance. Despite its troubled past, Sunbird announced plans to relaunch its iMessage service on Android on April 5.

Back in 2022, Sunbird entered the space with the ambitious goal of extending iMessage to Android users. However, the app faced serious security issues that led to its sudden shutdown shortly after launch. The issues, which include accessibility of user-shared media and real-time message visibility, prompted Sunbird to cease operations indefinitely.

Sunbird Relaunch Announcement

Now, after re-evaluating its technology implementation and organizational processes, Sunbird is making a comeback.Invitations to the revamped service will reportedly be gradually rolled out to those on the waiting list 9to5google.

In its press release, Sunbird highlighted its platform’s ability to bridge the gap between the Android and Apple ecosystems, facilitating secure communications within Apple environments. While the release doesn’t delve into the specific details of the changes made, Sunbird assures users of a powerful, secure and unified messaging experience.

More details provided on Sunbird’s website reveal the app’s improved security measures. The company has replaced its old architecture with a new “AV2” architecture that incorporates a secure messaging standard called MQTTS. Additionally, Sunbird emphasizes that unencrypted messages are never stored on disk or in a database, and static files are encrypted both in transit and at rest.

To strengthen its security efforts, Sunbird has hired the expertise of independent security consulting firm CIPHER and appointed former Google engineering director Jared Jordan as a formal consultant. These organizational changes signal Sunbird’s commitment to addressing past deficiencies and prioritizing user safety.

As Sunbird prepares to relaunch, it faces questions over its ability to provide a secure messaging platform. Despite the promise of enhanced security and improved infrastructure, users may use the app with caution and remember its troubled history. Only time will tell if Sunbird can regain user trust and become a reliable choice for Android users looking for iMessage compatibility.
