Erode (Tamil Nadu):

A 70-year-old woman was trampled to death by a rogue elephant in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve on Saturday.

According to police, the elephant entered the Netarapuram forest area under the Talavadi forest range of the Satyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) this morning in search of water and food. The elephant entered some sugarcane fields, causing damage to the standing crops, and then entered Neithalapuram village.

Police said the elephant attacked the victim, 70-year-old Kalama, when she came out of her home and trampled her to death on the spot.

Hearing the woman’s cries, the panicked neighbors scared the elephant away.

Talavadi police rushed to the spot, removed the body and sent it to Talavadi Government Hospital. People in the area gathered at the hospital and urged the forest department to dig deep trenches around fertile private land to protect crops and humans from wild animals, especially elephants.

Villagers told police that this was the third incident of an elephant being killed by an elephant in the area in two months.
