6-year-old boy falls to death in Borewell, Madhya Pradesh

Officials earlier said he was trapped about 40 feet deep.

Reva:

A six-year-old boy died after falling into an open well in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district two days ago despite efforts by multiple agencies to rescue him, an official said on Sunday.

The child fell into a well while playing near it in Manika village near the Uttar Pradesh border around 3 pm on Friday. Officials earlier said he was trapped about 40 feet deep.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDERF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities were involved in the operation to rescue the boy from the well.

Rescue teams supplied oxygen to a 70-foot-deep well and dug parallel pits to reach him.

Collector Pratibha Pal said the child was found on Sunday after a 40-hour rescue operation but was “unresponsive”.

Pal told reporters at the scene: “At around 8 a.m., the boy was found. We tried all we could, but could not rescue the child because the drill hole was too narrow.”

She added that the body had been sent to hospital for an autopsy.
