A 10-year-old girl named Shay Kang has died in a house in the West Midlands. Her elementary school described her as a “smart, funny girl.”

Shay was found at a property in Rowley Regis at around 12.10pm on Monday and pronounced dead at the scene.

West Midlands Police said a 33-year-old woman known to the girl was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Shea was a pupil at Brickhouse Primary School in the town, which said in a statement: “Our school is deeply saddened by the tragic death of a child.

“Shay was a bright, happy, funny child who was loved by all and will be sadly missed by everyone. The school is the heart of the community and following this devastating news we have begun working with our children and staff working together to support them.”

Police said they would not be looking for anyone else as part of their investigation, and a cordon remained in place around the house while inquiries continued. Police added that a post-mortem examination would be carried out in due course to determine the cause of death.

DI Dan Jarratt, who led the investigation, said: “A young girl has tragically lost her life and our thoughts are with her loved ones and everyone affected by this horrific incident.”

“We are working hard to establish what happened and we have made good progress with our investigation. The community is understandably shocked by what happened and we will continue to have a police presence and provide support to the area over the coming days. .”
