Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday it was crucial to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and speed up the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to counter a Russian invasion.
“There is no reasonable explanation why the numerous Patriot aircraft around the world still do not cover the skies of Kharkiv and other cities and communities under attack by Russian terrorists,” Zelensky said on social media. “We are concerned every day. Working hard to provide better protection for our people and Ukraine.”
Zelensky’s remarks came after Russia launched an airstrike on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, killing one person and injuring 19 others.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the Russian attack damaged 18 residential buildings.
Russia said on Wednesday it thwarted a Ukrainian rocket attack targeting the Belgorod region, while Ukraine said it used 13 drones in the attack overnight.
The Russian Defense Ministry said its air defense system shot down 18 Ukrainian rockets.
Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram that houses in several villages suffered some damage and at least one person was injured.
Belgorod, located on the border between Russia and Ukraine, is a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks as it attempts to defeat a Russian invasion launched more than two years ago.
