A 20-year-old University of Kentucky dancer died Sunday, leaving her twin sister heartbroken.

Kate Kaufling died of osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Just a few months after she happily announced she was done with chemotherapy, she died. She celebrated beating cancer.

Her twin sister Abbey, also a dancer at UK University, expressed her deep sadness. “My heart is broken writing this. My dear Kate, you are my people. You are my safe space in human form,” she wrote. “Kate and I have spent every minute of our lives together. From Kate’s first date with her to sitting on the floor chatting in her shower, we couldn’t be apart.”

“As I sit here today, I ask myself how I can continue without my twin sister, bridesmaid and soul mate to do everything with me, but I will for you Kate,” she said.

Abby is dealing with the unimaginable – life without her twin, her confidante, her soul mate. “I promise to wake up every day and live for you Kate,” she vowed. “Even though I’m heartbroken right now, I can say that I have the best guardian angel in heaven.”

The UK athletics community has expressed its condolences on Kate’s death. Sandy Bell, executive deputy director of British Athletics, said: “Even during cancer treatment, Kate continued to learn and set an amazing example for her teammates. Kate was loved by all who knew her and we will be deeply I miss her.”

Kate, who was studying for a nursing degree, died just three months after completing months of chemotherapy.
