X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday expanded password support to iOS users worldwide. The Elon Musk-owned platform launched Key in January as an alternative to traditional passwords. But at the time, it was only available to US users on its iOS app. Now, three months after its launch, the social media platform is expanding to other regions as well. While the feature isn’t currently available on the website or Android app, a report last month suggested Android users might soon get it as well.

The announcement was made by X official security account at postal It states: “Passkeys is now available as a login option for everyone on iOS worldwide! Give it a try.” While the feature is already rolling out, it may take a few days for everyone to receive it. It’s worth noting that Master Key utilizes alternative methods for authentication, such as Face ID, fingerprints, PINs, authenticator apps, or other devices to log into accounts. This eliminates the reliance on traditional passwords, which can be hacked or leaked during a data breach.

Passwords also provide a more seamless experience when logging into your account, as there is no need to remember complex passwords or manually enter them every time you log in. They also work across devices, however, this feature is only available on iOS on X.

A support page on X explains that the keys are constructed using public key cryptography from the WebAuthentication standard. When you register an account, the device generates a unique key pair for each account. One of the keys is public and stored on X, while the private key remains on the device. Now, whenever a user logs in, the private key is triggered and the registered device must approve the login attempt.

To enable keys on X, iOS users can visit your account > Settings and privacy > Security and account access > Safety > Additional password protection > master key. Here the user has to enter the password, select Add key, and then follow the prompts. Keys can be deleted using the same steps.
