Olympic medalist Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik has been named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of 2024. Sakshi, India’s only Olympic female wrestling medalist, was honored for her tireless campaign against former Indian Wrestling Federation president Brigitte Bhushan Sharan Singh’s sexual harassment allegations against female wrestlers.
Sakshi, along with two-time world championship bronze medalist Vinesh Phogat and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia, led the protest against Singh at Jantar Mantar here. Calls for his arrest for intimidating and allegedly sexually harassing female combat athletes in the country.
The protests, which began in January last year, evolved into a year-long battle against Mr. Singh, winning support and attention in India and abroad.
Charges were brought against Singer, but he continues to deny them.
“This fight is no longer just for Indian female wrestlers,” Sakshi said of the movement she helped start.
“This is for the daughters of India, whose voices have been silenced time and time again.” Shortly after Singh left office, his close aide and business partner Sanjay Singh was elected president of WFI.
The day Sanjay Singh took over WFI, Sakshi decided to quit the sport.
Other Indians on the list include actress Alia Bhatt, Indian-British actor Dev Patel and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
