The footage has drawn strong criticism around the world, with Muslim advocacy groups calling for an investigation into the “Islamophobic incident”.
The women were part of a pro-Palestine rally on the university campus on Saturday, where about 70 people were arrested.
An ASU spokesperson said they could not confirm whether university police were involved in the incident, but that the matter was under review. No additional details were given.
Aza Abuseef, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Arizona, said: “Wearing the hijab is part of their identity. This is a gross violation of the religious rights of peaceful protesters.”
Hundreds of students have been arrested so far in the United States, with footage emerging of officers violently detaining students, professors and journalists on various campuses.
The protests first began at Columbia University and have since spread to various US states and universities.
