Royal Challengers Bangalore Women suffered a thrilling last-gasp defeat in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. After losing to Delhi Capitals Women by 1 point, the defeat came as a shock to the entire team. Richa Ghosh almost took RCB Women home with her superb knock of 51 off 29 balls. But her elimination ended up being the decisive point in the game. After the game, RCB stars like Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse Perry were understandably heartbroken as their title hopes were dashed prematurely.

While Smriti struggled to hold back tears, Ellyse was overcome with emotion as she realized that the RCB women’s team almost missed out on the playoffs.

Chasing the target of 182 runs, RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana (7 balls and 5 runs) and Australian batsman Sophie Molineux (33 runs from 30 balls) came to the crease, however, they failed to score for the Bengaluru-based team in the match A good start. Mandana left the game after playing just five runs. RCB’s win rate in 1.3 overs is 9/1.

But Ellyse Perry (32 balls, 49 runs) took control of the situation with her blitzing knock but it was enough to take RCB to a better position. Perry hit 7 fours and 1 six at the crease. Partnering with Sophie, she took RCB to 89 in 11 overs before being dismissed for a run-out. Sophie was also dismissed by Arundhati Reddy, reducing RCB to 93/3 in 11.5 overs.

After Perry was dismissed, Richa started smashing the ball and scored the winning half-century in just 29 balls. The Indian wicketkeeper hit 4 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 175.86. She partnered with Sophie Devine (26 off 16 balls, including 4 balls and 2 sixes) and Georgia Wareham (12 off 6 balls) to win an incredible game for RCB victory. When Sophie and Georgia were eliminated, RCB were 165/5 in 19 overs with 17 overs remaining.

Richa gave RCB a chance to sustain with two sixes. But needing two runs off the last ball, she was run out and RCB missed out by one run.
