The world’s oldest man, 111-year-old Briton John Tinniswood, says his longevity is “just luck” and there’s no special secret to his diet – although his favorite food every Friday It’s fish and chips.
Tinniswood, who has been retired for more than half a century, inherited the Guinness World Records title from 114-year-old Venezuelan Juan Vincent Pérez Mora, who died earlier this week.
Tinniswood was born in 1912 in Merseyside, northern England. He is a retired accountant and former postal service worker. He is 111 years and 222 days old.
Yet when asked about his secret to longevity, he gave a succinct answer: “You either live long or you live short, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
Guinness World Records said in a statement that Tinniswood’s record was assessed by its experts and a team of gerontological researchers who classify the world’s confirmed “supercentenarians.”
The oldest person in history is Jiroemon Kimura of Japan, who lived to be 116 years and 54 days old. The oldest living woman and oldest living person is Maria Branyas Morera of Spain, who is 117 years old.
Tinniswood offers a somewhat cautious view of the state of the world.
“The world, in its way, is always changing. It’s an ongoing experience… It’s getting a little better, but not that much yet. It’s going the right way.”
