Meta has launched a series of new AI-driven features on its platform, including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. The revelations, which came to light during Meta Connect 2023, show the tech giant’s foray into artificial intelligence with the launch of “Meta AI,” an AI-powered assistant poised to integrate with Meta’s suite of apps, notably WhatsApp.

Meta AI has an impressive array of features that allow users to interact with it as if they were interacting with another human being. Developed using custom models derived from Llama 2 (a generative text model) and Meta’s large language model (LLM) research, Meta AI is designed to provide a seamless conversational experience. In a strategic partnership, Meta is also working with Microsoft’s Bing to integrate real-time information retrieval for text-based conversations.

Image generation at your fingertips

One of Meta AI’s standout features is its image generation tool, which generates realistic images based on text prompts in just seconds. Users can access this feature by typing “@MetaAI /imagine” and entering the desired text prompt, enhancing the visual dynamics of the chat.

Meta-artificial intelligence is not limited to individual chats; it also extends its usefulness to group conversations. However, its availability is currently limited to the United States, with no immediate plans to announce a global rollout. Nonetheless, Meta assures users that its AI assistant will provide valuable assistance, from making suggestions and providing comic relief to resolving disputes and imparting new knowledge.

During the demonstration, Meta demonstrated the versatility of Meta AI by demonstrating scenarios such as requesting mocktail recommendations, highlighting its practical applicability in the real world.

1. Open WhatsApp and find the Meta AI icon in the lower right corner.

2. Click to access the Meta AI inbox.

3. Easily raise queries or request image generation.

In addition to Meta AI, Meta also revealed the development of 28 additional artificial intelligence assistants and announced partnerships with well-known figures in sports, entertainment and Internet culture. Celebrities such as Dwyane Wade, Kendall Jenner, MrBeast, Naomi Osaka and Snoop Dogg now have dedicated AI profiles on Instagram and Facebook to provide users with personalized interactions. Meta plans to introduce more characters soon, aiming to enrich the user experience on its platform.

In addition, Meta has launched AI stickers for WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Facebook Stories to enhance visual communication with customized stickers generated from text prompts. The feature, similar to Snapchat’s AI-generated Bitmoji stickers, will be gradually rolled out to select English-speaking users next month, further enhancing the creative possibilities within the Meta ecosystem.
