A police dog played a vital role in the rescue of a missing Florida girl. The 11-year-old girl was found locked in a park bathroom.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to a missing persons call on Friday. The police dog, named Mary Lu, was reportedly deployed along with Deputy Sarah Ernstes to help search for the “missing and endangered” girl. Daily Mail.
Body camera footage captured the moment Mary Lu led Deputy Ernstes to a public bathroom at a park in the 16000 block of Carlton Lake Drive. Police dogs, which have a keen sense of smell, will indicate a girl is inside by displaying a “happy tail” motion (a behavior they display when approaching a person).
Officer Ernsts and another officer approached the locked bathroom and assured the girl it was safe to come out. “It’s just me, a female deputy, my dog and another deputy. You’re not in trouble, we just need to talk to you,” the deputy told her.
They then managed to convince her to open the door and the little girl came out safe and sound.
Officer Ernstes then asked the girl if she liked dogs and encouraged her to receive a comforting kiss from Mary Lou as a reward. “I promise she won’t hurt you,” the officer said. Despite initial hesitation, the little girl hugged the hero dog, creating a heartwarming moment.

After the initial tracking by Mary Lou, deputies followed the trail to a neighbor’s home. Residents drove the 11-year-old to an apartment building. It is unclear whether the girl left the home voluntarily, nor is it known why the neighbor gave her a ride.
So far, no one has been charged in her disappearance.
