Royal Challengers Bangalore star batsman Virat Kohli has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee for violating the IPL code of conduct during the IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. “Kohli has committed a Level 1 offense under Article 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct. He has admitted the offense and has accepted the sanction of the Match Referee. For a Level 1 breach of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final.” And it is binding.” read the official statement. After the controversial out, Kohli had a heated argument with the on-field umpires.
The controversy occurred during the third over of RCB’s innings when KKR fast bowler Harshit Rana dismissed Kohli. Kohli misplayed the full toss and delivered the ball straight to the bowler.
While KKR cricketers celebrated the dismissal, Kohli was surprised by the umpire’s decision as he felt the ball was above his waist and immediately took a review. Replays showed that the ball was above his waist when it made contact with the ball, but was falling down on its way towards the wicket.
Kohli was standing outside the crease when he played the shot and the trajectory of the ball showed that if he had stood in his normal batting position the ball would have gone below his waist. This calculation was done keeping in mind his height and considering the batting crease as his final position.
However, Kohli was not happy with the decision and had a heated exchange with the umpires. The star batsman kept shouting at himself on his way back to the dugout and even knocked down a dustbin after throwing his glove in frustration.
Talking about the match, KKR registered a narrow win over RCB by one run thanks to brilliant performances from Shreyas Iyer and Andre Russell and took a big step towards reaching the IPL 2024 playoffs.
