The government has appointed Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi as the next Commander of the Indian Navy.

The government has appointed Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi as the next Commander of the Indian Navy.

Mr. Tripathi, who has accomplished many important missions in his long career of about 40 years, currently serves as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff, will assume his new post on April 30.

Before taking charge as Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi served as Commander-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.

An alumnus of Sainik Rewa School and National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1985. A communications and electronic warfare specialist, he served as Signals Communications Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer on the Navy’s frontline warships and later as Executive Officer and Chief Operations Officer of the Navy’s guided missile destroyer Mumbai. He commanded the Indian Navy ships INS Vinash, INS Kirhi and INS Thrissur.

He has also held various important operational and staff positions including Fleet Operations Officer, Western Fleet, Mumbai, Director Naval Operations, Principal Director Network Centric Operations and Principal Director Naval Plans, New Delhi. After promotion to Rear Admiral, he served at National Headquarters as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) and as Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Fleet.

After being promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral in June 2019, the officer was appointed as the Principal of the prestigious Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, Kerala. He served as the Director of Naval Operations from July 2020 to May 2021. During this period, he witnessed the high pace of naval maritime operations. He ensured that the Navy remains a “combat-ready, credible, cohesive and future-oriented force, ready to respond to a range of complex security challenges, despite the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic.” Subsequently, from June 21 to February 23, the flag officer also served as the director of personnel.

The admiral is a graduate of the Defense Staff College, Wellington, where he was awarded the Timaiya Medal. He also attended the Naval Advanced Command Course and Naval Command School at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, in 2007-08, where he received the prestigious Robert E. Bateman International Award.

Lieutenant General Tripathi was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Nausena Medal for his devotion to duty. He is also an avid sportsman and plays a keen interest in tennis, badminton and cricket.

This officer is an avid student of international relations, military history, and the art and science of leadership. His wife Shashi Tripathi is an artist and homemaker. The couple have a son, a practicing lawyer, and his husband, Tanya, who works in policy development.
