A vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver crashed into a toddler’s birthday party at a yacht club on Saturday, killing a young brother and sister and injuring several others, including some, a Michigan sheriff said. The person was seriously injured.

At around 3 p.m., a 66-year-old woman drove her car 25 feet into the building at the Swan Creek Rowing Club in Berlin Township, killing an 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother at the scene. About 30 miles south of Detroit, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

“First responders described the scene as extremely chaotic and emotionally charged for those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” he said.

Three children and six adults were flown by two helicopters or ambulances to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries, he said.

Other injured people received first aid at the scene, and some were taken to the hospital by private vehicles.

Goodnow did not identify the woman who was driving the vehicle, but said she was taken into custody and being held at the Monroe County Jail on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death.

He said she is cooperating with authorities and may face more charges as the investigation continues.

Authorities learned the woman may have visited a nearby tavern before the incident, Goodnow said, adding that they closed the establishment and planned to execute a search warrant there as part of the investigation.
