Vaughan Gething or Jeremy Myers to become Welsh Labor leader

The results of the race to become the next First Minister of Wales will be announced today.

Current Education and Welsh Language Minister Jeremy Miles and Economy Minister Vaughan Geting have been competing over who will lead Welsh Language labor and country.

Which of the two is successful will be announced this morning, after voting closes at noon on Thursday.

Two people are bidding to replace Mark DrakefordChief Minister since 2018, Announcement of intention to resign end of last year.

The election of any candidate will be a historic milestone Wales.

Mr Gething will become the country’s first black chief minister and Mr Myers will be the first openly gay.

Whoever succeeds will be the country’s fifth leader since the Senate was established in 1999.

Only members of the Labor Party or affiliated organizations such as trade unions will be able to vote – meaning around 100,000 people will be able to take part.

Mr Gethin has the support of most of the big trade unions and Lord Kinnock, who led the UK party from 1983 to 1992.

Mr Miles has the support of a majority of Labor members in the Senate.

Mr Drakeford is not expected to step down immediately and will take final questions from the First Minister next Tuesday.

There is still a vote to be held in the Senate, where opposition groups can put forward their candidates.

Since Labor is the largest party, it is unlikely that any other group will assume this role.

The transfer of power comes as Wales faces challenging times, with farmers protesting, NHS waiting lists hitting record highs and the economy recovering from the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Drakeford acknowledged there were issues his successor would need to deal with.

He told the PA news agency: “Whenever anyone takes on this job, there’s always a full inbox and there’s always some challenging questions in there.”

When asked what advice he would give to his successors, Drakeford told them to be “bold” and “push the boundaries”.

He said: “I have long believed that the danger of my party being in power in Wales for a long time was that we might look as if we were resting on our laurels and just waiting to die. The blame turned to the government.

“Labour is ambitious, radical and reforming and it will get on top of the really challenging issues.”
