US says it attacked three underground storage sites belonging to Houthi rebels in Yemen

The U.S. military said on Friday it had struck three underground storage facilities used by Yemen’s Houthi rebels as Iran-backed rebels continued their attacks on Red Sea shipping.

Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that the U.S. military “conducted self-defense attacks on three underground Houthi storage facilities in areas controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.”

The report stated that the US military also “successfully shot down and destroyed four drones” in areas controlled by the Houthi armed forces in Yemen on Friday, and also recorded four anti-ship ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi armed forces into the Red Sea.

“No injuries or damage were reported by U.S., coalition or commercial vessels,” Central Command said.

The Houthis began attacking shipping in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea in November, an operation they said was intended to express solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

They have vowed to target Israeli, British and American ships as well as vessels heading to Israeli ports, disrupting traffic along key trade routes along Yemen’s coast.

The attacks have caused a sharp rise in insurance costs for ships crossing the Red Sea and prompted many shipping lines to switch to longer routes around the southern tip of Africa.
