U.S. police warn drivers returning from Canada to beware of thieves trying to steal their cars computer magazine the report said.

According to the Vermont Law Enforcement Division, many motorists have discovered AirTags hidden in their cars after returning from Canada by road. Police believe the air tags were placed with the intention of eventually stealing the car.

“They may be identifying vehicles that may be stolen and shipped overseas as part of an auto theft ring,” said Ryan McLiverty, a cyber analyst with the Vermont Intelligence Center.

McLiverty reports that there have been a number of such incidents, but in Montreal there has been an increase in criminals using Apple AirTags to track, steal and ultimately sell cars.

In addition, he said the cars may also be used to transport drugs across borders.

Common places to hide trackers in cars are under the windshield wipers, on the front grille, or inside the car.

This is not the first time such an incident has been reported, in December 2021, York Regional Police in Canada reported five different incidents of cars being stolen via tracking devices.

Apple will notify iPhone users if it detects that you are carrying an unknown AirTag. The company has also released an app for Android users that allows them to manually search for trackers.
