The Indian government says it is rescuing citizens who were lured to Cambodia for employment and forced to participate in cyber fraud schemes.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement on Saturday that the Indian Embassy in Cambodia was working with Cambodian authorities to rescue and repatriate around 250 Indians, including 75 Indians in the past three months.

Jaiswal was responding to Indian news reports that more than 5,000 Indians are stranded in Cambodia and are being forced to commit online scams against people back home.

“We are also working with Cambodian authorities and Indian agencies to target those responsible for these fraudulent schemes,” Jaiswal said.

The spokesperson said the Indian government and its embassy in Cambodia have issued several warnings informing them of such scams.

The Cambodian embassy in India did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.
