UPI is India’s mobile-based payment system that allows people to make payments around the clock through a virtual payment address created by the customer. UPI is a system that integrates multiple bank accounts into a single mobile app (of any participating bank), merging multiple banking functions, seamless funds routing, and merchant payments into one whole.

A joint statement from India and France said that by 2023, India and France are committed to nurturing a thriving ecosystem and building cooperation that empowers its citizens and ensures their full participation in the digital century. NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and France’s Lyra Collect have signed an agreement to implement the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in France and Europe.

In July last year, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France, he announced that India and France had agreed to use the UPI payment mechanism, starting with the iconic Eiffel Tower. Prime Minister Modi said Indian tourists in France can now pay in rupees.

On July 14, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Indian community at the Seine Concert Hall in Paris and said: “Whether it is UPI or other digital platforms in India, they have brought huge social changes to the country, and I am very happy that India And France is also working in the same direction. India and France have agreed to use Unified Payments Interface in France. I will leave after the agreement is reached. But, it is your job to move forward. Recently, French President Macron visited India and attended the Republic Day military parade as the chief guest. During the visit, Macron and Prime Minister Modi visited a tea stall in Jaipur and drank tea and interacted. Macron uses UPI to pay there. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi explained the UPI digital payment system to Macron when the two leaders visited a local shop during their visit to the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur.
