A Russian nighttime attack in the Dnipropetrovsk region of central Ukraine killed at least eight people, Ukrainian officials said on Friday.

The Interior Ministry said six people, including two children, were killed in the Synelnykivsky region, southeast of Dnipro, while two others were killed in Dnipro.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on social media on Friday that the attack damaged a residential building and a train station in the regional capital Dnipro.

“Every country that provides air defense systems to Ukraine, every leader who helps convince our partners that air defense systems should not sit in warehouses but be deployed in real cities and communities facing terror, and everyone who supports our defense All saviors,” Zelensky said on social media, calling on allies to provide better air defense systems.

The Ukrainian Air Force said it shot down 15 missiles and 14 drones in the attack. The military also stated that it shot down a Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bomber for the first time. Russian warplanes are capable of carrying long-range missiles used to attack Ukrainian cities.

Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oreshchuk issued a statement on social media, saying that “the Air Force’s air defense missile force, in cooperation with the Ukrainian defense intelligence services, destroyed a Tu-22M3 long-range strategic bomber for the first time.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday that the strategic bomber crashed in the Stavropol region of southern Russia while returning to base from a combat mission, hundreds of kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory. One of the four crew members is said to have died. Two other people were transported to local medical centers. Another crew member is said to be still missing.

Zelensky said in a speech late Thursday that the military is expected to produce 10 Bokhdana howitzers this month. “This is a very good result” for the country’s production of defense materials, he said.

Zelensky said the talks with the military also included discussions on Ukrainian border communities, including the information sector, access to Ukrainian television signals and blocking Russian propaganda.

Zelensky said Russian propaganda “always leads to instability and, in the worst case, attempted occupation.” He said Ukraine and its partners would “work together” to resist any Russian influence and address any technological challenges.
