Four women were killed and 20 others injured when a tractor-trolley collided with a truck in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri on Saturday, police said. They said the accident occurred near Fardpur village around 4 am when around 35 people on a tractor-trailer were returning from the children’s ‘namkaran’ ceremony.

According to Virendra Singh Lodhi Rajput, one of the injured passengers, 25 of the 35 people who went to Beldhara village to attend the ceremony of their daughter’s child were women.

Bichwan police station inspector Avanish Kumar Tyagi said that when they reached Fardpur village, there was some problem with the tractor’s headlight. When a speeding truck hit the tractor-trolley, they pulled over to repair it.

He said 20 injured people were taken to district hospitals, while four others, including three women, were taken to Safai Hospital in critical condition.

Fulmat (35), Ramakanti Devi (45) and Sanjay Devi (30) died on the spot, while Dropadi Devi (40) succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital, the SHO said.

Locals caught the truck driver and handed him over to the police.
