Launching a scathing attack on Trinamool Congress over the Sandeshkhali issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused the party of protecting its leader Sheikh Shahjahan, who has been arrested amid allegations of sexual harassment and land grab.
Addressing an event in West Bengal’s Arambag on Friday, PM Modi said the people of the state were asking whether the votes of “a few people” were more important for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee than the suffering of women in Sandeshkhali. He also hit out at the opposition Bharat Alliance and questioned the “silence” of its leaders on the issue.
Referring to the slogan of Trinamool Congress ‘Mother, soil, manush’ (Mother, Land and People), PM said in Hindi, “What has Trinamool Congress done to the women in Sandeshkhali, who keeps talking ‘Mother, soil, manush’, has made the entire nation sad and angry. The soul of (reformer) Raja Ram Mohan Roy must be crying due to the actions of these people.”
