The Delhi High Court on Friday asked the Tihar jail authorities to allow Aftab Amin Poonawalla, the main accused in the sensational Shraddha Walker murder case, to appear in public for eight hours a day before locking him in a solitary cell at night cell.

The order was passed by a bench headed by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait on a petition filed by Poonawala, which argued that under the garb of security, he could not Being held in solitary confinement.

Poonawalla’s lawyers claimed that unlike other prisoners who were taken out for eight hours a day, Poonawalla was allowed out for one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening.

“As this is the request of the petitioner’s counsel, we direct the jail authorities to unlock him for eight hours and place him in a separate cell during the night as per the rules applicable to other prisoners,” the bench, which also included Giri What a judge. Cassiparia ordered.

Lawyers for the prison authorities said the defendant was not housed with other prisoners because of perceived threats.

He had earlier said that the trial court had passed directions to provide due security to Poonawalla after he was attacked while being taken to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Rohini.

Poonawalla’s lawyer said that although he had not committed any “prison crimes”, his client was allowed “zero” human interaction in prison and was held in solitary confinement.
