This US public library is waiving fees for cat photos

The Worcester Public Library also said it will also accept “honorary cats”

Calling all cat lovers! The Worcester, Massachusetts Public Library offers the perfect solution for people whose library collections are overdue or lost. Until the end of March, just bring a picture of your feline friend (a photo, a painting, or even a magazine clipping) and they will reactivate your library card!

The program, called March Meowness, is where they give the community a chance to make amends for misplaced books or damaged items without the fear of late fees holding them back. The initiative has been a huge success, with hundreds of items returned, a Facebook page filled with photos of the cats, and a growing “cat wall” in the main library featuring adorable kitten art.

The Worcester Public Library also says it will accept “honor cats”: “You can show us a picture or drawing of a dog, raccoon, orca, capybara, or any other animal.”

When talking about why they set up the program, WPL Executive Director Jason Homer said British Broadcasting Corporation“We have found that as schools close and we enter quarantine, many of our customers may have items that have been lost during the pandemic,”

“We want to get everyone back into the library and using our resources, and we also want to establish a very low threshold to waive those fees,” he said.

However, there are some rules for people to return books. Returned books must come from the Worcester Public Library and not another library, and must have been lost or damaged for at least two months.

Meanwhile, library administrators will review whether to accept photos of cats if the person has failed to return five or more books in the past, according to media reports.

Some of the other cat-themed events the library is doing include a screening of the 2019 movie Cats, cat eye makeup tutorials, an hour of “stress relief” with shelter cats, DIY cat crafts, scavenger hunts and more!
