French soldiers took part in daily ceremonial events alongside members of the Scots Guards in front of hundreds of tourists in central London, in what the palace called an “unprecedented appearance”.

A military band can be heard playing the national anthem and other British and French music in the palace forecourt.

The king asked his brother, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, to oversee the event, along with his wife Sophie, as he suffers from cancer.

Edward and Sophie reviewed French and British troops, and a similar changing of the guard attended by President Macron also took place at the Elysée Palace in Paris.

The British Ministry of Defense said that the presence of French personnel at Buckingham Palace was part of a long-term plan for joint British and French events to celebrate the establishment of historic military and diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2024.

It will include participating in each other’s air shows, as well as major events marking the anniversary of D-Day this June.

The royal family’s participation in today’s symbolic event is a reminder of the important role the monarchy plays in maintaining relations with other countries through soft diplomacy.

The royals walked past 32 members of the 1st and 2nd Infantry Regiments of the Republican Guard, followed by 40 Guardsmen from Company F of the Scots Guards, who lined up face to face with their French counterparts.
