Tesla recalls Cybertruck over acceleration defect

Tesla said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the situation.

According to a U.S. notice issued this week, Tesla is recalling 3,878 Cybertruck vehicles due to a defect that may cause the vehicles to accelerate unexpectedly and increase the risk of collisions.

Tesla notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on April 17 of a situation where its accelerator pedal could become stuck on Elon Musk’s futuristic U.S. pickup truck, the Cybertruck.

Tesla said in the notice that if the accelerator pedal becomes stuck, “the performance and operation of the pedal will be affected, which may increase the risk of a collision.”

Tesla said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the situation. The company said it would replace or redesign the accelerator to address the issue.

Musk has been a vocal advocate of the Cybertruck, declaring at last November’s launch event that “eventually, the future will look like the future!”

But the vehicle’s use of large flat sheets of unbent stainless steel created manufacturing challenges. Musk said that increasing production will take time, and the goal is to produce 250,000 vehicles by 2025.

Earlier this week, Tesla announced it would lay off more than 10% of its global workforce in response to increasing competition among electric vehicle makers and slowing demand growth in some markets.
