US Congressional Black Caucus lines up to expel Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar

Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar is seeking re-election in Michigan.

Washington:

In one of the rarest of circumstances, the Congressional Black Caucus is lining up to oust one of its current members, Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar, who is seeking re-election from Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.

In a major political move, Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford and his predecessor Joyce Beatty announced their support for Adam Hollier over Sanidal in the Democratic primary.

In the American political tradition, incumbents rarely face opposition from party leadership in primaries.

Michigan’s 13th Congressional District is majority black, and for the first time there is no black representative in the House of Representatives.

“From the U.S. Army to Governor Whitmer’s Cabinet, Adam Hollier has dedicated his life to serving his community and state. I know he will continue to serve as an effective representative who puts people over politics. Adam is The kind of leader who understands the importance of protecting our freedoms, fighting for our rights, and ensuring everyone has opportunity,” Horsford said in a statement.

Beattie said Houllier was “exactly the kind of leader we need to be with us in Congress.” “While some politicians would rather tweet than show up, Adam always steps up, shows up and delivers,” she said.

American media called this an unusual development.

Sanidhar is the first Indian American to represent Michigan in Congress. In 2022, he defeated his Republican opponent by 47 percentage points, breaking Detroit’s 67-year streak of black Michigan State representatives in the process.

In the first quarter, he raised $5 million and secured the support of more than 15 influential elected officials and organizations. He has been endorsed by Congressmen Ami Bera, Judy Chu, Robert Garcia, Marcy Kaptur, Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ted Lieu, Seth Magaziner, Brad Sherman and Dina Titus.

He was also endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign, Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA), the National Education Association, the Michigan Education Association and the Newtown Action League.

“Together, we will continue to fight for progress, equality and opportunity for all residents of Michigan’s 13th District,” he said in a statement earlier this month. Tanidal said he remains committed to engaging with constituents and listening to their concerns , and advocate for policies that address community challenges.
