Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina has backed Shubman Gill to become the captain of the men’s national cricket team in the near future. While there are doubts over the future of current skipper Rohit Sharma, the veteran opening batsman recently revealed that he would love to help the team win this year’s T20 World Cup, as well as next year’s World Test Championship (WTC) ). Rohit lost the captaincy of Mumbai Indians (MI) to Hardik Pandya, who also left Gujarat Titans Team (GT) captaincy, bringing joy to his former team.
Hardik is now with MI and Gill has been named GT captain for IPL 2024. However, the team lost four of its first seven games in the tournament.
Raina has given his full support to Gill to become India’s next captain after Rohit.
“I would say he will be the next Indian captain (after Rohit Sharma). Ban sakta hai vo,” Raina said during a discussion in Larantop.
Gill will be available later on Sunday when GT take on Kings XI Punjab (PBKS) in the second match of the Sunday doubleheader of IPL 2024.
The 23-year-old is the youngest captain in IPL 2024 and the GT run-scorer this season. He has scored 263 runs in seven games at an average of 43.83.
PBKS is ninth in the standings with two wins from seven races, while GT is eighth with three wins. In their last match earlier this season, Punjab defeated Titans in Ahmedabad.
