Delhi police and criminals have four weeks to respond.

The Supreme Court today directed Delhi Police and four convicts in the Soumya Uswanathan murder case – Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljit Singh Malik and Aja I Kumar gave notice. The action came in response to a plea filed by Soumya Vishwanathan’s mother Madhavi Vishwanathan seeking to quash the life sentences awarded to four convicts by the Delhi High Court bail.

In September 2008, television journalist Soumya Vishwanathan was shot dead while driving home from get off work on South Delhi’s Nelson Mandela Marg. Delhi police initially said the motive for her murder was robbery.
On February 12 this year, three months after the four were sentenced to life imprisonment, the Delhi High Court suspended their sentences and granted them bail pending appeals against their convictions and sentences.
The High Court justified its decision as the four convicts had spent nearly 15 years in prison since their arrest in connection with the case.
The convicts are also serving prison sentences for the murder of IT professional Jigisha Ghosh, who was abducted and killed just meters away from her home in Vasant Vihar in March 2009.
