Watch: These eco-friendly polling booths in Tamil Nadu are made from coconut, bamboo leaves

Signage is made from handwritten cloth banners, avoiding the use of flexible materials.

A recent video of Indian Administrative Service officer Supriya Sahu has gone viral. The clip showcases a unique ‘green polling station’ in Tirupattur district of Tamil Nadu. This innovative booth, the result of a collaboration between regional collectors and volunteers from the Tennessee Climate Change Mission, highlights the state’s commitment to sustainability.

There are about 10 of these eco-friendly stalls in total, with shades and decorations made of natural materials, which is refreshing and a reflection of environmental awareness.

These unique polling stations cleverly utilize coconut and bamboo leaves to create cool, natural shade. Bananas and palm fronds added a touch of local tradition and a warm welcome, making the voting experience both environmentally friendly and culturally significant.

Additionally, signage at these booths is made from hand-written cloth banners rather than flexible materials, promoting sustainability and minimizing plastic waste.

“Awesome. The green roofs advocated by the Green TN Climate Change Mission where voters stand under the scorching sun should be implemented across India to increase turnout,” wrote a third user.
