Stock Market Updates: Sensex, Nifty unchanged in early trade

Today’s Indian Stock Market Updates: The Sensex and Nifty indices are expected to start trading on February 6 with a loss of 31.50 points, driven by the GIFT Nifty trend, which indicates a lower start for the overall index.

In volatile trading on February 5, the Indian equity benchmark failed to sustain initial gains and ended lower. Investors are still watching for clues on interest rate cuts and the trajectory of inflation in the outcome of the Reserve Bank of India meeting.

Monday close

Benchmark Sensex fell 354 points on Monday amid sell-off in key indices Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel and Maruti amid weak trend in Asian and European markets.

The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 354.21 points, or 0.49 per cent, to end at 71,731.42 points due to late selling.

The highest intraday hit was 72,385.93 and the lowest was 71,602.14.

The Nifty index fell 82.10 points, or 0.38%, to close at 21,771.70 points. Sensex and Nifty were up about 0.7% in the previous session.

The benchmark index traded in a narrow range after a muted opening before falling sharply in the final hour. FMCG, telecom, financial and IT stocks gained, while pharmaceutical, auto and energy stocks gained.

Among Sensex companies, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Maruti, Bajaj Finserv, HCL Technologies, Titan, Hindustan Unilever, JSW Steel, UltraTech Cement, State Bank of India and Reliance Industries were the major laggards.

Tata Motors on Friday reported a tripling in December quarter net profit to 7,100 crore rupees, sending its shares up nearly 6%.

Sun Pharma, Power Grid, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Steel, NTPC and Tata Consultancy Services were the other gainers.

In Asian markets, Tokyo closed higher while Seoul, Shanghai and Hong Kong ended lower.

European market quotes were slightly lower. U.S. markets closed higher on Friday.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude fell 0.53% to $76.92 a barrel.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 706.9 crore on Friday.

On Friday, the BSE benchmark gained 440.33 points, or 0.61%, to close at 72,085.63 points.

Nifty gained 156.35 points, or 0.72%, to 21,853.80 points.
