Singapore has ordered a recall of spice maker Everest’s Fish Curry Masala, a product popular in India, saying it contains a pesticide called ethylene oxide in higher than permitted levels limit.

Singapore has recalled spice maker Everest’s fish curry masala, a popular product in India, saying it contains a pesticide called ethylene oxide at levels above permissible limits.

In a statement issued by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Thursday, the agency directed importer Sp Muthiah and Sons Pvt Ltd to recall the products.

The State Forestry Administration said ethylene oxide is not approved for food use and is only used to fumigate agricultural products to prevent microbial contamination.

“Under Singapore’s food regulations, ethylene oxide is permitted for the sterilization of spices,” the SFA added.

The food agency said that while there is no immediate risk from consuming food contaminated with low levels of ethylene oxide, long-term exposure may cause health problems.

“There is no direct risk from consuming food. Therefore, exposure to this substance should be minimized,” it said.

The State Food and Drug Administration further stated: “Consumers who have purchased the products involved are advised not to eat them. Consumers who have concerns about their health after eating the products involved should seek medical treatment immediately. Consumers can check with the point of purchase.”

Everest has yet to react to the development.
