'Had the best sleep': Crypto founder calls time spent in Singapore jail a 'pleasant experience'

He also said that once he adjusted to prison life, he experienced a “magical feeling”.

Zhu Su, the co-founder of failed crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital, was released from a Singapore prison last month after serving a three-month sentence for non-cooperation with liquidators. According to South China Morning Post, Mr Su reflected on his time behind bars in an upcoming podcast interview, calling it a “really enjoyable experience”. He claimed he had the “best sleep” of his life while serving a sentence in a Singapore prison, and said everyone should spend time inside a cell.

”Obviously, no one wants to go to jail but I think overall it’s a really enjoyable experience. Not to the extent that it would be highly recommended. But I will say that it’s something that if everyone has to experience once, I think it’s good for you.

Mr. Zhu added that he was able to continue his studies, get plenty of exercise, and was well fed with three meals a day and the occasional fruit.

“And then the sleep is amazing because they turn off the lights at 9.30pm and the lights come back on at 5.30am. But because you don’t have any Internet time, you don’t have any alcohol, no caffeine (or) anything, you’re just going to fall asleep immediately,” Mr. Zhu added.

Since there were no beds available in the prison and he had to sleep on the floor, he said, “It’s similar to a Japanese tatami mat” and that it is “really good for de-stressing your…spine.” ‘

He also said that once he adjusted to prison life, he experienced a “magical feeling”. He added, “Because you feel a kinship with your ancestors. Like, this is really how I’m supposed to live.”

Notably, his firm Three Arrows Capital collapsed in July 2022 because it did not repay a $667 million loan from Voyager Digital. He was arrested in Singapore last September for failing to cooperate with the investigation into the collapse of his crypto hedge fund. The 36-year-old man was initially sentenced to four months in jail, but was released early on the basis of standard good behavior provisions.

His statements also generated discussion online and received mixed reactions. “Su Zhu was so online that he had to go to literal jail to experience the same sense of “kinship with his ancestors” that the rest of us get,” Lawrence Day, creator of Wildcat Protocol, wrote in a sarcastic comment. Just by stopping logging and walking barefoot on the beach with the cool breeze.”

Another wrote: “Turning a negative experience into a positive is a very powerful skill, but let’s not fool ourselves, Zhu.” A third said: “The only reason he says that is because he was in A prison in Singapore. Try a third world prison next time, I suspect he’d say the same.
