Singapore recalls Everest fish curry masala, claims it contains pesticides

New Delhi:

Singapore has recalled Everest fish curry masala, a popular spice product imported from India, saying it contained high levels of ethylene oxide, a pesticide considered unfit for human consumption. The move was in response to a notice issued by the Hong Kong Center for Food Safety highlighting that the level of ethylene oxide exceeded the permissible limit.

“The Hong Kong Center for Food Safety has issued a notice to recall Everest Fish Curry Masala from India because its ethylene oxide content exceeds the permissible limit,” the Singapore Food Agency said in a statement.

The SFA has instructed the importer, Sp Muthiah & Sons Pte. Ltd., to initiate a comprehensive recall of the products.

Although ethylene oxide is commonly used as a pesticide to fumigate agricultural products to reduce microbial contamination, its use in food is strictly prohibited. The SFA said excessive levels in the Everest fish curry masala posed a potential health risk to consumers, despite Singapore regulations allowing its use for spice sterilization.

“Consumers who have consumed the products involved and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers can contact the point of purchase for enquiries,” the State Food and Drug Administration wrote in a statement.
