Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh believes that veteran batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should consider retiring from the shortest format of the game after the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the US. Kohli and Rohit’s future with the Indian team in T20Is has been a major point of discussion ahead of the World Cup. The duo had not played any T20I in over a year until the home series against Afghanistan in January earlier this year.
While Yuvraj feels Kohli and Rohit have earned the right to decide on their future, now is the time for the younger players to come in and stake their claim.
“As you grow up people start talking about your age and they forget about your age. These guys have been great players for India, and they know (retirement) whenever they want. ),” Yuvraj, who is the ambassador for the T20 World Cup 2024, told the ICC.
Yuvraj also suggested that playing in all three formats has had an impact on Kohli and Rohit, who are in the latter stages of their careers.
“I would like to see more young players in the T20 format because it increases the burden on them (experienced players) to play 50 overs (ODIs) and Test matches. I would like to see a lot more after this (T20) World Cup.” Young people come into the team and make the T20 team for the next World Cup.”
The possibility of Rohit and Kohli batting together during the World Cup has been discussed.
It is reported that the selectors will meet Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid in the coming days to choose the World Cup team.
A meeting with Rohit is expected to take place in Delhi ahead of Mumbai Indians’ match against Delhi Capitals on Saturday.
