Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram took a trip down memory lane and recalled the time when he bowled to Sanju Sasmon in the nets during the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) training camp. As some of you might remember, Akram was the bowling coach of KKR from 2010 to 2016 and during the same phase, the franchise won two IPL titles. During a recent conversation, Akram revealed that he still supports KKR in the IPL, having been a part of the franchise for seven consecutive editions.

Akram also recalled that the lack of bowlers in the camp gave him the opportunity to swing his arms. The great fast bowler told that 16-year-old Samson, who was a shy boy at that time, had come to bat in the nets.

“I think this incident happened in 2010. I remember KKR had black kits in 2010. In 2011 they changed to purple. So we organized a camp before the IPL. Not at the Eden Gardens, Rather, there were only a few bowlers available for the camp. He was very shy and then he came to bat.

The 57-year-old revealed that after defeating Samson with a few outswingers, he dismissed the then youngster with a ripper on the third ball. He also remembered bidding farewell to Samson after uprooting his stump.

“So, I took the ball, and I hope Sanju you remember this. Sanju remembers this. I beat him with a few outswingers. I was also young at that time. The third ball I bowled an inswinger and uprooted his stumps. ” So I went and did this (indicating the farewell he gave by twirling his finger),” he added.

Akram also suggested that he knows Samson will be a quality player.

“At that time, he didn’t get a chance, but I thought he had the potential to be a good player in the future. He was quiet. He was a small kid. When big names are around you, you come under pressure, I Was only with him for a short time, but I thought he could be a good player,” he concluded.

Samson is currently leading Rajasthan Royals and the franchise is on top of the table.
